Your first week, simplified.

DAYS 1–2

Arrive. Settle. Learn.

Choose one base. Meet your instructor, check board fit and get comfortable with the beach before chasing more waves.

DAYS 3–5

Find your rhythm.

Build around one good session a day. Keep afternoons open for food, rest, yoga or a guided nature outing.

DAYS 6–7

Leave a little space.

Let the conditions decide your final session. Allow a realistic transfer day before your flight.

How long should a Costa Rica surf vacation be?

5 days: one base only—arrive, one lesson, two solid sessions, leave buffer before the flight. Skip coast-hopping.

7 days: the sweet spot for most first surf trips. One town, dawn sessions, one soft adventure day.

10 days: room for a second nearby base (for example Jacó + Dominical) if transfers stay realistic. Two far coasts in ten days usually wastes water days.

For a full walkthrough with sample weeks, read the Costa Rica surf trip guide. For vacation-week shapes and base cards, see Costa Rica surf vacations.

Choose your base

Tamarindo and Jacó offer town services and lesson options. Guiones suits a trip built around coaching and a slower routine. Santa Teresa appeals to travelers who want surf and beach-town energy. Dominical and Puerto Viejo need careful break selection, especially for less experienced surfers.

For lessons, prioritize proximity to your school over a sea view. For families, ask about shade, pools and safe non-surf activities. For remote work, confirm recent Wi-Fi performance, a quiet workspace and backup arrangements directly with the property.

Know your base? Book one coaching session early in the week. Then keep a flexible non-surf day for boats, parks or rest when the ocean is messy.

Tip: start on the Pacific with a beginner-friendly Tamarindo surf lesson. Then add a boat or park day when the swell softens.

A strong Costa Rica surf vacation usually pairs water time with one flexible non-surf day. Book lessons close to the beach you will actually use, and keep tours for lower-swell windows. Destination pages link local lessons and activities when you are ready to book.

LESSONS

Progress without guesswork

First-timers and mixed-skill groups do better with a coached session early in the trip. Confirm instructor ratios, board size and the lesson beach before you pay.

TOURS

Make the rest day count

Catamarans, snorkel days, park walks and island trips fill the gaps when the ocean is messy. Open the destination guide for your base to see the current sponsored options.

VACATION PACE

One good session a day

Protect recovery time. A surf trip is not a contest to maximize hours in the water—it is a plan that still feels like Costa Rica.

Surf trip gear: rent in CR or fly with a board?

For a first week, renting locally is usually simpler: fewer airline fees, easier ding risk, and boards matched to lesson beaches. Bring a board bag if you already travel with a quiver and know your preferred length.

When to go (and when not to)

Pacific dry season (roughly Dec–Apr): a common first-trip window in the northwest—still not a promise of small or safe waves every day.

Pacific green season (roughly May–Oct): more southern swell energy possible; plan around rain, roads and rest days.

Caribbean: do not copy the Pacific calendar. Check the Caribbean forecast before a Puerto Viejo surf focus. See when to go for more.

Getting around

Compare Liberia (LIR) with San José (SJO) based on your destination. Airport proximity on a map can hide a long road transfer. Check current road and ferry conditions before booking, and avoid ambitious multi-coast itineraries for a short stay.

Respect the place and the lineup

Before you book

Ask your school about instructor qualifications, group size, equipment, the lesson beach and weather cancellations. Confirm transfer pickup details and board-bag policies. Check entry requirements with official sources for your nationality and travel dates.
