How to plan a Costa Rica surf trip

Pick a coast and base, sketch a realistic week, then book lessons where you land—without the guesswork.

What “a Costa Rica surf trip” actually looks like

Most strong weeks are not a coast-to-coast dash. They are five to ten nights in one (sometimes two nearby) surf towns, with dawn sessions, one coaching day, and at least one soft day for travel, rain or rest.

Count travel days honestly: Liberia (LIR) serves Guanacaste; San José (SJO) serves Central/South Pacific and the Caribbean. A same-day airport-to-surf plan is fine for Jacó; it is optimistic for Dominical or Puerto Viejo after a long inbound flight.

One base beats two if your trip is under a week. Two bases only pay off when the transfer is half a day or less and you still protect a buffer before the flight home.

Pacific or Caribbean for your first surf vacation

PACIFIC

Usually the first-trip default

More beginner beach-break options, denser lesson infrastructure in hubs like Tamarindo and Jacó, and a dry-season window many travelers use Dec–Apr in the northwest. Green season can still work with rest days and flexible plans.

CARIBBEAN

Different swell, different logistics

Puerto Viejo does not follow the Pacific calendar. Reef and point energy, tide-smart break choice, and a real travel day from SJO. Better when you already surf confidently or have a coach lined up.

Decision shortcut: first stand-ups and mixed-skill groups → Pacific hub. Experienced surfers chasing a different coast → Caribbean with forecast checks. Details by month: when to go.

Surf tours, lessons, and adventure days worth booking

Book water coaching after you know the base—not before. One lesson early in the week sorts board size, peak choice and confidence. Keep adventure days (boats, parks, snorkel) for softer swell or recovery.

Tamarindo — stand-up-friendly beach for first sessions.

Nosara / Guiones — no Nosara-local Viator surf lesson yet; the coached option below is nearby Playa Sámara (~40-minute drive), not a Guiones beach lesson.

Santa Teresa — early sessions and local bank knowledge pay off.

Dominical — when the main beach packs power, many travelers use a softer guided option at Playa Chaman in Uvita (~10–15 minutes).

Budget, boards, and getting around

Boards: rent locally for a first week unless you already travel with a quiver. Airline board fees and ding risk add up quickly.

Shuttles vs rental: shared shuttles reduce stress on first arrival; a rental helps if you plan nearby beach pivots and are comfortable with local roads, rain and (on Nicoya) dirt sections.

Airports: LIR for Tamarindo/Nosara/Santa Teresa corridors; SJO for Jacó, Dominical and Puerto Viejo. Map distance is not transfer time.

When to go for a surf trip (by coast)

Pacific dry season is a common first-trip window in the northwest—not a guarantee of small or safe surf every day. Green season can bring more energy and rain; plan rest days. Caribbean trips need their own forecast check. Full framing: when to surf Costa Rica.
